Brand Profile
|
The Montecristo No. 2 cigar is the gold standard in shaped Cuban cigars, and is often great. It's a considerable cigar, 6 1/8 inches long with a hefty 52 ring gauge, and an unmistakable pointed head that channels the smoke onto the palate. Montecristo No. 2 are rolled in several Cuban cigar factories, so there's the occasional problem with quality and consistency, but at their best Montecristo No.2 cigars are masterpieces of full-bodied flavor, loaded with leather, earth and coffee notes. This is one of the reasons that the Montecristo No. 2 is one of the few smokes to ever rate 95 points in Cigar Aficionado Magazine, a true classic. Great now, even greater when aged!.
Montecristo cigars have easily been among the most popular Havana cigars for over two decades, the Montecristo Cuban cigar has a distinct Cuban flavour which has delighted the world's cigar smokers since it was first introduced in 1935 by the H. Upmann cigar factory.
Today around forty percent of Habanos Cuban cigar exports bear Montecristo's famous mark.
When the Montecristo cigar line was founded in 1935 by Alonzo Menendez and Pepe Garcia, they were restricted to five cigar sizes, identified by numbers instead of names, as they had also just purchased the H. Upmann brand from the British firm, J. Frankau, and intended to concentrate on extending the latter brand's volume. Originally known as H. Upmann Montecristo Selection, its name was changed to the simpler, Montecristo, by another British firm, John Hunter, who were appointed UK agents.
British film director Alfred Hitchcock was one of the Montecristo cigar brand's notable early devotees, especially during World War II when, based in Hollywood, he sent supplies to grateful friends in England - the war interrupted the import of Havana cigars to Britain so the Montecristo cigars brand development was initially concentrated in the USA.
In the late fifties, shortly after Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba, the Menedez and Garcia families moved to the Canary Islands, but the continuity in quality and unique blending of this famous brand was assured by Jose Manuel Gonzales, known as Masinguila, who is widely considered to be the finest cigar maker in Cuba's history.
In the early 1970s, the Montecristo A cigar and the Laguito (Cohiba) Nos. 1, 2 and 3 sizes were added to the Montecristo cigar range. A firm favourite with famous smokers such as Lord Lew Grade and Tom Jones, many consider the Montecristo No.1 the finest Havana cigar in the world.
About Habanos Cigars
Montecristo is a brand within the range of Habanos cigars. The Habanos Denomination of Origin certification is applied to all cigars in which 100 per cent of the tobacco used in the cigar has been grown in Cuba. Likewise, it is an essential requirement that all cigars manufactured in Cuba are subjected to numerous quality control checks, both during the agricultural and curing process, as well as during all stages of manufacturing in the cigar factory.
The same rigorous procedures are applied to the selection of the appropriate leaves, quality control, of draw, of the true flavor of each of the Cuban cigar brand names and, finally, the quality of the cigar's appearance and presentation. The quality of the Habanos Cuban cigar is the result of the mystical union of four elements: soil, varieties of Cuban black tobacco, climate and the wisdom of Cuba's agricultural workers and cigar makers.
Numerous attempts to achieve the standards of authentic Cuban cigars in other areas of the world with seeds of Cuban origin have failed to attain the unequalled quality of genuine Cuban cigars. These same elements: the harmonious combination of the sun, the average temperature, atmospheric humidity, soil and subsoil composition are those which make the quality of the Cuban cigar, both in terms of agriculture and manufacturing, unique to Cuba. Therefore, the Habanos Cuban cigar trademark printed on the boxes of brand name Cuban cigars is the guarantee that these cigars are backed by Habanos Denomination of Origin Protection. This is a guarantee of quality and origin that is awarded to only the finest Cuban cigars manufactured in Cuba under the strictest quality control measures, with the best leaves selected from Cuba's tobacco regions.
