Brand Profile
|
The Dominican Cohiba cigar took years to develop. The dark, rich cigar wrapper leaf is grown in the sub-tropical West African climate of Cameroon. Cohiba's supple and flavorful Jember binder is grown in Indonesia. To balance the richness of the Cohiba cigar wrapper, the smooth-smoking Piloto Cubano filler leaves are grown in the Dominican Republic.
The Dominican Cohiba cigar is a deeply satisfying, rich in flavor and history that does not overpower the smoker.
Cohiba XV Cigars
In response to the rising demand for fuller-flavored cigars, cigar master Daniel Nunez set out to create an extension of the successful Cohiba cigar line. The result is Cohiba XV, an Extra Vigoroso cigar made with all the inspiration and dedication to quality that have made Cohiba one of the most respected premium brands in the country.
The most distinctive leaf of a Cohiba XV cigar is its sun-grown Sumatra wrapper from Ecuador. Harvested only from the tops of the tobacco plants, each of these wrapper leaves is aged in tercio for three years. The flavor is then enhanced by aging all of the leaves again for six months in crates of fragrant cedar. In crafting Cohiba XV cigars, the most flavorful Nicaraguan Ligero and Dominican Piloto Cubano Ligero are bound with the richest three-year-old Connecticut Broadleaf. The result is a cigar that is made, not only to please, but also to impress.
Every inch a Cohiba cigar in terms of its tobacco selections and craftsmanship, Cohiba XV cigars deliver the richest, deepest Cohiba flavor.
Cohiba Black Cigars
The Cohiba Black cigar line is a more recent addition to the Cohiba cigar family. With a nice and oily dark maduro wrapper and aged Dominican Piloto binder, Cohiba Black cigars have a rich and complex flavor that appeals to even the most discerning aficionado.
The cigar features a multi-country blend with a rich and dark Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper. Of particular note is the cigars's filler, which is comprised of leaves from the Dominican Republic and Mexico. The Cohiba Black cigar is finished with a Dominican Piloto binder, aged for at least three years in tercio. The Cohiba Black cigar is the result of years of careful blending by General Cigar and master blender Daniel Nunez widely known for producing some of the world's supreme cigars.
According to Bill Chilian, director of marketing for Cohiba Black cigars, "It was a laborious process for Daniel Nunez to develop a suitable blend to complement the highly successful Cohiba collection. We believe that in creating Cohiba Black, Daniel has brought to market an exciting cigar that is destined to be an instant addition to the smoking repertoires of devoted fans of the Cohiba cigar brand."
Cohiba Black is the first line extension of the venerable Cohiba cigar brand in five years.
Cloaked in an eye-catching, solid mahogany box, Cohiba Black cigars are available in four frontmarks: Cohiba Black Churchill cigars measures (7 x 49), Cohiba Black Corona cigars (5 1/2 x 42), then, individually protected in elegant crystal tubes, Cohiba Black Robusto cigars measure (5 1/2 x 50). Rounding out the collection is the Cohiba Black Supremo cigar (6" x 54).
Cuban Cohiba Cigars
As with many non Cuban brands, Cohiba cigars have a Cuban cousin. For interest we've included the Cuban cigar brand profile here:
Cuban Cohiba cigars hit the Cuban cigar stage in 1966. The Cohiba cigar brand name would became famous upon registration of the Cohiba brand in 1969. When it was finally brought to the market, it was by then the most coveted Cuban cigar in the world.
The origin of Cohiba cigars begins with one of Fidel Castro's bodyguards introducing Cuba's President to cigars privately made by Eduardo Ribera - at the time a top roller at the La Corona cigar factory in Havana, Cuba. The unique blend of tobacco from the Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba so impressed Castro that a high-security cigar factory was set up in El Laguito, to maintain an exclusive supply for 'El Presidente'.
The brand was officially named Cohiba (a Cuban Taino indian word for cigar) in 1968 but was restricted to distribution within diplomatic circles until 1982, when it was made available to VIPs such as the King of Spain and other heads of state.
The tobaccos used for Cohiba cigars are quite special. It is grown at full length in selected plantations in the Vuelta Abajo region, in the province of Pinar del Río, Cuba.
Production began with three sizes, each a personal favourite of Castro - the Cohiba Lancero, the Cohiba Corona Especiale and the Cohiba Panetela. They were re-christened Laguito No.1, No.2 and No.3 - and the first two sizes featured a unique, tiny pigtail on their cigar caps.
In November 1992, to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of Cuba (and even more importantly, its cigars), five new sizes known as the Cohiba Linea 1492 (the six former sizes have now been renamed the Cohiba Linea Clasica) were launched at a cigar dinner at Claridge's Hotel in London. Named Cohiba Siglo (for century) I, II, II, IV and V, i.e. the five centuries since Columbus landed on Cuban soil.
